As part of the Center for Materials Research, the Nanomaterials and Integrated Nanosystems Group at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) focuses on the design, synthesis, and application of nanostructured materials. 

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

• New energy conversion and storage technologies 
• Nanosensors and sensor arrays 
• Self-sustaining MEMS/NEMS 
• Infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) devices 
• Multifunctional coatings
• Nanocomposites. 

We are currently looking for postdoctoral researchers with interest in the following areas:

(1) Met     
       Maritime and aerospace applications are in strong need of lightweight, high-strength materials. By increasing the strength and stiffness of a material, the mass required to bear a certain load decreases, allowing for increases in payloads, fuel efficiency, and performance. The goal of this proposal is to develop carbon nanostructure-reinforced metal alloys.

(2) Solid State Li-Ion Batteries
         The applications of high-energy and high-power density Li-ion batteries for medium- and large-scale energy storage are currently hindered by safety concerns arising from the chemical instability and the fire hazard of current battery system. The aim of this project is to develop a nonflammable, temperature-stable solid state Li-ion battery that does not suffer from chemical instability and does constitute a fire hazard.  

           Associates should have a broad interest in nanotechnology, energy, and/or sensor research. Experience in nanomaterial synthesis and characterization, materials and systems modeling, and/or nano- and microfabrication is desirable. Work will involve the support and guidance of master-level students, leadership in one or two research projects, and involvement in proposal writing to support ongoing research activities.
