In July, we will offer a five-day Computer Science “summer school” for Salinas 7th and 8th graders. Our partner is the Lyceum of Monterey County, a local non-profit with over 50 years experience providing after school and summer activities to area youth. Hartnell College and Cal State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB ) and high school students from Recruitment in Science Education (RISE) will serve as role models, mentors and coaches for the middle school students.
The program will be held at Hartnell College’s East Alisal Campus, recently completed with NASA grants. An important factor is that the mentors come from the same neighborhoods in Salinas as the middle school students.
With additional grants, we plan to expand our CS summer school program into the regular school year by integrating CS activities and our mentor network with existing after-school clubs. We envision that our CS summer program each year can provide a “kickstart” for teachers trying to interest students in STEM projects during the school year, such as the Monterey County Science Fair. Our newest proposals build on our two previous NSF grants, in which we designed a new program called “Cyber Adventurers."
