Selection Process Leading to the Outstanding Thesis Award

  1. ECE Department Outstanding Thesis Award Committee (OTAC) Composition

    • Nominations to the Outstanding Thesis Award (OTA) are evaluated quarterly by the ECE Department Outstanding Thesis Award Committee chaired by the ECE Department Associate Chair for Research. The current Associate Chair for Research is:
    • The OTAC includes ECE faculty from the following 7 main ECE areas; communications, control, electronics, networking, power, sensors, and signal processing.

  2. OTA Eligibility Criteria

    • Outstanding Thesis Awards are targeted towards students who have exhibited exceptional quality in their thesis research work. The OTA is specifically designed to acknowledge exceptional students who are self-starters, innovative thinkers and produced thesis technical work of quality significantly higher than what is included in the average MSEE thesis.

    • OTAs will take into consideration factors such as importance of the thesis topic, advancement of theory and/or application in filed, relevance of thesis to DoD/DoN, significance of thesis methodology and results, degree of difficulty, follow-on work (presentations, publications, patent applications, etc..), independence of work, quality of the thesis presentation, and thesis write-up.

    • Joint-theses are NOT eligible for the OTA.

    • Nominated students must have their final draft signed and accepted by the thesis processor NLT the first week of the quarter following graduation to be eligible to receive the award.

    • No more than 10% of the MSEE graduating students may receive the OTA in a given calendar year.

  3. Award Inscription

    • The transcript shall bear the annotation "received Outstanding Thesis Award". US students shall be responsible for preparing an appropriate bullet for their fitness report which documents both the research and the award.

  4. Nomination/Selection Process
  • The current nomination/selection process is split in the following two phases.

  • First phase:
    • By end of 3rd week of graduation quarter: Main advisor nominates student by returning the completed nomination form (doc) to Ms. Alice Lee, 590 Curriculum Ed. Tech, in electronic Word format.
    • By end of 4th week of graduation quarter: OTA Committee selects ECE nominees.
    • By end of 5th week of graduation quarter: Selected student(s) provide completed student information sheet (doc) containing biography, thesis title, advisor name, thesis abstract (300 words or less) to Ms. Alice Lee, 590 Curriculum Ed. Tech, in electronic Word format. Late submissions will not be accepted.
    • By end of 6th week of graduation quarter: Complete nomination packages forwarded to President.

  • Second phase:
    • End of 1st week of quarter following graduation: Advisor provides evaluation of oral presentation and final thesis document to Ms. Alice Lee.
    • End of 2nd week of quarter following graduation: OTA Committee evaluates final thesis document. No more than 10% of graduating students will receive this award in a given calendar year.

Note: It is the responsibility of the advisor to return the required paperwork in a timely fashion to insure consideration. Late submissions will not be considered.
