Introduction

This online manual was written to gather information that is pertinent to the students enrolled in the degree programs of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School. This information will be revised and supplemented from time to time. The student is encouraged to keep a copy of this information in a loose-leaf notebook for ease in accommodating any future updates.

The primary information in this handbook is the requirements for the various academic degrees controlled by the department and samples of the checklists used to ensure that officer-students meet these requirements. It is important for the officer-student to understand the difference between degree requirements and curriculum requirements.

The degree requirements are set by the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and must be met before the degree is awarded. The program that leads to the MSEE degree at NPS is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). This accreditation certifies that the degree program meets minimum requirements in the Electrical Engineering field. (There are about 250 accredited EE programs in the United States.) The program which leads to the MSCE degree at NPS is not accredited by the ABET.

The curriculum requirements are the requirements specified by the Navy sponsor of each curriculum. These requirements establish military requirements in addition to the academic requirements. It is the responsibility of the Curriculum Officer and Academic Associate to ensure that the curriculum requirements are met. (See your Curriculum Officer for more information on curriculum requirements applicable to your curriculum.)

Other potentially useful information included in this handbook are a set of guidelines for writing your thesis and a set of diagrams illustrating the prerequisite structure for the 4000-level courses.

Disclaimer -- Although every attempt is made to present accurate information in this handbook, it is the officer-student's responsibility to meet all degree requirements. The Program Officer, Academic Associate, and Department Chairman will advise the student of the requirements, but the student is solely responsible for the content of his/her program. In all cases, the Department Chairman will finally decide if the student meets the MSEE or MSCE degree requirements.
