Computer Systems

The Computer Systems specialization track provides students with both a broad view of the field of computer engineering and also the in-depth technical knowledge necessary to solve complex technical problems involving computer hardware and digital systems. Facilities include a well maintained digital systems laboratory and a microprocessor laboratory, in addition to the microelectronics laboratory and the ECE department and NPS computing facilities. Computing resources include an SRC Computer Corp. reconfigurable super computer, in addition to conventional high-end Windows, Linux, and Unix workstations. State of the art computer aided design software tools are used extensively in courses and research.

Courses cover a wide range of topics that are critically important to the armed forces, including fault tolerant and high availability computing, parallel processing and reconfigurable computing, microprocessors and embedded computing, FPGA and ASIC design, etc...

Computer Systems faculty receive substantial research funding from various different sponsors within the Department of Defense. Research topics include fault-tolerant reconfigurable computing for space-based applications, high-performance reconfigurable computing for signal processing and national security applications, high-speed numeric function generators, high-speed content-addressable memory realizations, VLSI and mixed-signal system-on-a-chip design, and FPGA and DSP architectures for military applications.
