Col Hans J. Woehlermann joined the faculty of the NPS in May 2012. He received his M.A. in Business and Administration from the University in Hamburg in 1980. With his background as an Army officer in the armored cavalry corps, he graduated from the German Armed Forces General Staff Course in 1993 and from the French higher military education at the Ecole Militaire in Paris in 1995.
He then held a variety of national and international Leadership and Staff Positions at the tactical, operational and ministerial level, including assignments in the Operations Division at the German Army Forces Command and in the office of the head of the German government, where he gained in depth experience at the top level of the military/political interface. He also assumed operational functions as chief of staff of an army brigade and as a battalion commander including operational deployments to the Balkans. Since 2002 he held several posts in politico-military affairs and bilateral relations in the German MOD, in the International Military Staff in NATO HQ in Brussels and in the French Ministry of Defense in Paris.
His expertise centers on NATO, the European Union and the European Common Security and Defense Policy including NATO/EU Military Policy, Concepts, Plans and Operations. Before Colonel Woehlermann arrived in Monterey he assumed a post as a lecturer at the Federal Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Hamburg, Germany.
Col Woehlermann currently teaches European Common Security and Defense Policy with a particular focus on NATO (US)/EU relations.
