The Monterey Peninsula Airport, three miles from the Naval Postgraduate School, is served by several flights daily from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, and Phoenix. Commercial taxi service through Yellow Cab is readily available from the airport to the school . For complete information see our Maps and Directions page.
Participants are encouraged to notify IDARM in advance of their scheduled arrival date, time, and flight number.
Participants wear civilian clothing -- open collared shirts and slacks, but no jeans, shorts etc.-- to class. It is suggested that participants bring at least one suit or sport coat for some social events. Uniforms are not required and social activities require only normal civilian dress. Medium weight clothing is recommended. The year round climate of the Monterey Peninsula is characterized by temperatures ranging from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 20 degrees Celsius) during the daytime, and from 10 to 20 degrees (F) cooler at night. Rain may be expected from November through April; it is rare (but not unknown) during the remainder of the year. NPS has an excellent gymnasium, so athletic gear/shoes are recommended for those who my want to use the facilities.
Meals are available at the El Prado Dining Room of the Naval Postgraduate School conveniently located in Herrmann Hall. Meal cost varies with menu selections. The Monterey Peninsula area is known for its cuisine and also has many excellent restaurants.
Facilities & Services:
The Navy Exchange Retail Store is a short walk from Herrmann Hall and is open to US military and international participants. The Exchange facilities include barber shop, laundry and dry cleaning services, and an automobile service station.
A branch of the Navy Federal Credit Union is located in Herrmann Hall. International participants will need a local bank account if they wish to cash any checks while they are in Monterey (including living allowance checks and checks from their Embassy). For this reason, all international participants are strongly encouraged to bring adequate cash (US dollars) and US money orders with them to cover all planned expenses.
A US Post Office is conveniently located across from the Navy Exchange.
A limited range of medical services is available at the Presidio of Monterey Clinic for active duty military participants. Availability of services for international participants is as specified in their orders. Civilian participants must seek medical care from a private physician.
Certificates of Completion are presented to participants at the close of their IDARM course.
The IDARM Program Administration manages quota control, assists with check-in and check-out procedures, makes BOQ room assignments at the school, helps with pay and allowances for international participants, assists with travel arrangements and handles other miscellaneous administrative matters.
