Dr. Peter Purdue

Peter Purdue was born in Dublin, Ireland. He received the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Chemistry from the University of London (1967) and the Master of Science degree (1969) and Ph.D. degree (1972) in Statistics from Purdue University.
He taught statistics, probability, and operations research courses at the University of Kentucky from 1971 to 1984. From 1984 to 1986, he was Program Director for Statistics and Probability at the National Science Foundation, Washington, D.C. In September 1986, he joined the faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School as Professor and Chairman in the Operations Research Department. He served as Dean of the Division of Operational and Applied Sciences from July 1995 to July 1998, as Dean of the Division of Operational and Policy Sciences from July 1998 to July 2001, and as Associate Provost for Strategic Planning/Special Projects at the NPS until March 2003. He has served as Associate Dean of Research and Special Advisor to the Provost. He has extensive experience in all aspects of administering a graduate university within a Federal system. He has written analyses for and briefed at the senior levels of the DOD/DON.
He has been a Visiting Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, at the University of Umea in Sweden, and at Oak Ridge National Labs. His research interests are in Applied Probability and Operations Research, with applications to military systems. He has published extensively in the Applied Probability literature. He has participated in a number of professional activities sponsored by CINCPAC, the Joint Staff (J8), OSD and the UK MOD.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a member of the Institute of Operations Research and Management Sciences, and a member of the Military Operations Research Society (MORS). He served as a member of the Board of MORS and is the Founding Editor of the journal “Military Operations Research”.
