About this Page
This page contains information and links to sites of interest to students and faculty in the Naval Postgraduate School's Manpower Systems Analysis curriculum.  It does NOT include links to many of the research resources described on the Library's DatabasesResources for the School of Business and Public Policy, and other pages on the  Library's web site.  When doing research, these pages should also be consulted, or you will miss many important resources.

DMDC
If you're not familiar with the types of statistical data and reports you can obtain from DMDC,  check out the DMDC Profile (listed under Public Sites).  It is only available to US Government and DoD employees and those serving in the  military.  Their Information Delivery System (IDS) provides data on DoD military and civilian personnel.  It requires a password.  Contact Ann Jacobson, Dudley Knox Library's GSBPP Subject Specialist, if you are an NPS student, faculty or staff member and want information on how to obtain a password.

Research Centers and Reports 

Government and other agencies produce a wide variety of defense-related reports that are relevant to defense manpower research. The Library owns some of these reports in print or in microfiche, and a growing number are available on the Internet at no charge. If you are an NPS student, faculty or staff member doing mission-related research, if we don't have it, we can probably get it for you! The following list of agencies producing or disseminating defense-related reports is not comprehensive - consult the Library's web site and see the Reports section of the Resources for the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy page for links to  additional resources.

Brookings Institution
The Brookings Institution produces books, policy briefs and other studies on Economics, Foreign Policy, and Government.  Some of the policy briefs are available free on their site.  The Library owns or can obtain most Brookings publications, and we subscribe to their journals.

Center for Human Resources Management
A program within the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) that produces reports on a variety of human resource management issues, many of which are relevant to defense manpower. Most are not available full-text online.

The Center concentrates on studying and analyzing military personnel issues. Their site includes articles on numerous relevant issues.

Center for Naval Analyses (CNA)
    Selected Publications on Human Capital Management
    Selected Publications on Health Care
CNA analysts perform federally funded research for the Navy and Marine Corps on defense-related subjects including many of interest to manpower such as recruitment and retention, military health care, and compensation. From their web site you can search for selected abstracts. The Library owns many CNA reports. Please also check the catalog in our Restricted Resources and Services library (located on the first deck of Dudley Knox Library), since many CNA reports are limited to Government or DoD only, and may be difficult to locate elsewhere. CNA only sends selected reports to DTIC (see below).

DTIC Online
Through its Public Technical Reports database, the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) indexes and abstracts defense-related government-sponsored research reports.  The library owns some of these reports in print, and has nearly all of them on microfiche. The version linked to here provides access to all unclassified, unlimited citations since 1975. Private STINET provides access to all citations since 1975 as described above, plus citations to documents limited to government and DoD only. In addition, a growing number of reports on Private STINET are provided full text. Access to Private STINET is limited to U.S. students, faculty and staff, and requires an individual password. Government Accountability Office (GAO) Reports (formerly General Accounting Office)
The GAO  is the investigative arm of Congress and produces reports on a wide range of subjects of interest to Congress, including many that are defense-related. All publicly released GAO reports from 1995 onward are available full text. The Library owns many in print as well.

Hudson Institute
This public policy research organization forecasts trends and develops solutions for governments, businesses and the public.  

Human Resources Research Organization
Human resources web links, research summaries.  

Michael D. Palm Center (continues work of the former Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military.
    Publications
The Palm Center promotes the interdisciplinary analysis of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trangender and other marginalized sexual identities in the armed forces.

MilitaryHOMEFRONT
The official DoD web site for Quality of Life information.

National Bureau of Economic Research
The NBER is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. Research is conducted by scholars around the country. Many working papers are available for downloading at no cost. 

RAND
Rand produces analyses of a wide variety of national public policy issues including defense. From their web site you can search for abstracts and obtain selected reports full text online. The Library owns many Rand reports. Rand sends many of their reports to DTIC.

Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals (AULIMP)
Provides citations from military-specific journals. Coverage begins in 1990.

CQ Weekly and CQ Researcher   
CQ Weekly
includes searchable full text of this well-known print magazine covering legislative news and analysis. Coverage begins with 1983. CQ Researcher contains reports on controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, pros and cons, and bibliographies. Coverage begins with 1991.

EconLit  
Indexes and abstracts the world's economic literature: journals, proceedings, books and more. Now available in CSA.

Ingenta
The Ingenta Library Gateway is a searchable database of more than 11 million citations from over 20,000 journals. Some articles are provided full text.

ProQuest  
Provides access to a wide variety of newspapers and journals. Find research on computers, the military, management, economics, business, human resources, finance, taxation, applied science and technology, and more. Many of the articles are available full-text (some with images). Others are abstract only.

Staff College Automated Military Periodicals Index (SCAMPI)
Provides selected citations to journal articles, documents and reports. Access is via the Miliitary Education and Research Library Network (MERLN).

American Demographics
Full text articles on demographics and demographic trends.  Great for researching the characteristics of particular generations like Generation X, Generation Y, Baby Boomers, etc.

Armed Forces & Society
Previously edited by NPS faculty member Mark Eitelberg (and others), this is the official journal of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society.  Interdisciplinary in nature, it includes articles on military sociology, psychology, civil-military relations, and other subjects relating to military manpower. The full text is available online to NPS users. This link  may also work for full text access.

Current Population Surveys
CPS
The CPS is a monthly survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and is the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics of the U.S.

Click on People on the menu bar on the left side to view a variety of statistics on military personnel strength, recruitment, demographics and compensation. Unfortunately, the information is rather outdated (last updated 2003).

This web site from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides background on the NLS, links to the full text of reports and papers, and tells how to order NLS data and documentation.

National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience (NLS) Bibliography  
The NLS Annotated Bibliography is an on-going effort to provide the public with an up-to-date record of research based on data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience (NLS). In 1995 the last printed version of the bibliography was published. That year's edition contained approximately 2,500 citations of NLS-based journal articles, working papers, conference presentations, and dissertations published between 1968-1995. In 1996 the printed version was replaced by this on-line version. 

Occupational Employment Statistics
OES
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) program conducts an annual survey to produce estimates of employment and wages for specific occupations.  

Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID)
The PSID is a longitudinal survey of a representative sample of US individuals and the families in which they reside. It has been ongoing since 1968. The data are collected annually, and the data files contain the full span of information collected over the course of the study. PSID data can be used for cross-sectional, longitudinal, and intergenerational analysis and for studying both individuals and families.  

Population Representation in the Military Services
The Population Representation in the Military Services is an annual Department of Defense report on social representation in the US Military Services. The report provides data and comments on demographic, education, aptitude, and socioeconomic characteristics of applicants, new recruits, and enlisted and officer members of the Active and Reserve Components. This site links to pdf files of the reports from 1997-2008.

Demographic Profile of the Military Community (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 reports used to be available, but now it appears that only 2003, 2004 and 2005 are accessible. The description below is retained in case we are able to locate the previous versions of this excellent report)
From the MilitaryHOMEFRONT.  This Demographics Report presents a synthesis of demographic information describing military members and families in the military community. This annual report is designed as a reference tool for professionals who develop policy or deliver programs and services to military members and families in the Armed Forces.  The 2000 Demographics Report has been expanded to include significant descriptive information about reserve and guard personnel and their families, female military members and retirees. In addition, select census data are presented as a point of reference and trend data (for 1980, 1985, 1990, and 1995) are included where possible.

Youth Attitude Tracking Study
YATS
Conducted annually by the Department of Defense, the YATS collects information about American youth that is of interest to the military, such as enlistment propensity, advertising awareness, recruiter contact, slogan recognition, and media and internet habits. Available on this web site are current and past reports as well as related special reports.

Reenlistment and Retention Rates

Department of Defense

The Annual Report of the Secretary of Defense to the President and the Congress (ADR) includes an appendix on Personnel Readiness Factors that includes retention, reenlistment and continuation rates for all of the services. This site provides access to the ADRs from 1995-2005.

Defense Almanac provides some enlistment statistics for all of the services. Unfortunately, it appears to no longer be updated.

Below is a highly selective list of reports of interest to NPS defense manpower researchers.  It is in no way intended to be comprehensive.

The Blended Workforce:  Maximizing Agility Through Nonstandard Work Arrangements
Written by two faculty at the University of Illinois-Chicago.  Examines the potential of and issues surrounding using temporary workers and other alternative work arrangements in government positions.
