  Sakai LMS Help

The Sakai Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE) is an open source, web based learning management system which allows Instructors and Students to store and retrieve course material, communicate with each other and track student progress through the course.  In addition to course sites the CLE can host project sites where project members can share documents and collaborate.  The CLE is accessible from any web connected device using your NPS user name and password.

Getting There

Guest Access

Non-NPS users must be invited by a course instructor or project organizer to access the CLE.  More details about how to access the CLE once you've been invited is available in the Guest Access Overview (.pdf)

Once logged in, your My Workspace provides navigation to all of your course and project sites.  Larger size image

Instructor Support

CLE training and additional information is available on the NPS Intranet in the Information Technology area.  If you are not currently connected to the NPS Intranet you can use the Remote Access page to review your connection options.

The CLE is organized into tools. Below is a list of tools and a brief description of each. All tools may not be available in all sites.

Assignments View assignments and submit responses online
Blogger Keep a chronological web log of news, commentary or events on your site
Calendar View assignment due dates and other events of interest
Chat Room Participate in real-time, written conversations with other course participants concurrently connected
Drop Box Allows private file-sharing between instructors and students
Forums/Discussion Forums Engage in written conversations, not in real time
Glossary View contextual definitions of terms used in your course
Gradebook (instructors only) Compute and store grades

Help Access help documentation
Membership (My Workspace) View courses in which you are a member
Messages Send email to course participants
News Display an RSS feed from an external site
Podcasts Create and get URL for site podcasts
Polls Take course polls
Preferences (My Workspace) Set your personal preferences, such as time zone, tab order
Profile (My Workspace) Set and make public personal information, including pictures
Resources Store and retrieve course documents
Roster View list of course participants
Site Editor (instructors only) View/Edit site properties and participants
Site Setup (My Workspace) Manage properties of your My Workspace area
Site Statistics (instructors only) View statistics on your site by user, event or resource
Syllabus Course syllabus
Tests & Quizzes View and take tests and quizzes and automatically feed the results to the Gradebook
