Certificate Offering Cybersecurity Fundamentals Open for Applications

By MC2 Patrick Dionne

The NPS Department of Computer Science is currently seeking applications for a three-course, distance learning Cybersecurity Fundamentals Graduate Certificate, with instruction set to begin July 2, 2018. The certificate is free and open to Navy and Marine Corps officers with the completed courses applicable towards a Master’s Degree in Computer Science.

“There are a lot of officers who know that cybersecurity and cyber operations are important, they just don’t know the details of how it’s accomplished,” said Distinguished Professor of Computer Science Dr. Cynthia Irvine. “This course gives them the confidence to deal with any issues associated with these areas, and helps you better understand the challenges of cyber operations as a whole.”

The certificate is a part-time, graduate-level, non-degree program designed to enable participants to gain a foundational understanding of basic concepts and methods involved with computer network defense, vulnerabilities and exploitations. The certificate is broken up into three courses: Introduction to Computer Security, Secure Management and Systems, and Network Security, with each course aiming to enable informed choices on improving network defense.

“The first course covers the broad terminology and techniques that are used within cybersecurity, the second course addresses the operational aspects of managing secure systems in an IT infrastructure, and the third course focuses on network security and the communication between the various components,” explained Irvine. “Together, someone who has taken each certificate course will gain a strong understanding on the basic concepts to run and keep a network secure.”

This is the third time NPS has offered the certificate beginning with the summer of last year. The certificate is taken over a three-quarter period, with the projected graduating date for the July cohort in March of 2019.

“We take the first 50 applicants that reach out and have them begin the process of applying to NPS so they can receive the certificate as an official transcript,” said Megan Rock, who helps coordinate the program’s admissions. “People who have already been to NPS or are currently attending go through a streamlined process after applying to the certificate.”

To get on the program’s waiting list, send an e-mail to cyberapps@nps.edu; applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Organizers say interested applicants should not apply through the standard NPS admissions process, rather, students will be given further instructions through e-mail once selected. Applicants require a baccalaureate degree, basic understanding of computers and networking, and command endorsement to apply.
