Orientation Program Introduces New Faculty, Staff to Campus

By MC2 Michael Ehrlich

Recently-hired NPS faculty and staff watch an overview video of the institution during the new employee orientation program in Herrmann Hall, Aug. 5. Following a welcome to campus from NPS President retired Vice Adm. Ronald A. Route and the university’s senior leadership team, the new hires were introduced to varied benefits, policies and resources that come with employment at NPS.

"The primary goals of the new employee orientation are to provide an overview of the NPS mission and to meet the NPS leadership; to share relevant information on various programs, benefits and resources available to new employees; and, to provide required in-person training on ethics, security, safety and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program," explained NPS Director of Human Resources Ermelinda Rodriguez-Heffner. "The employees also come away with a list of resources and points of contact they can reach out to for additional information."

Acting Provost Dr. Jim Newman offered his thoughts on the unique environment on campus, blending traditional academic and military cultures into a single organization. But, Newman added, it is that very blend that serves as the university's strength.

"I'm not going to stress more how important it is to have the right blend in your own mind, and to acknowledge what we do here as civil servants and government employees," Newman said. "It carries a certain level of responsibility that doesn't necessarily exist in private industry and academia, but it is a very important part of our core values."

Parisi continued Newman's message, encouraging new members to embrace the diversity and strength of the entire NPS faculty and staff team. "We're all in the Navy now," he said. "This is our ship … and we are all Sailors and Marines now on one team."
