Overview

Prof. Luhrs has 20 years of experience working for diverse academic institutions and for industry in areas related to Materials Science and Engineering. She has more than 60 international peer reviewed journal publications, numerous conference manuscripts and presentations, 3 book Chapters and 11 issued patents. Prof. Luhrs received the NPS Carl E. and Jessie W. Menneken Faculty Award for Excellence in Scientific Research in 2014 and was a Fulbright awardee in 2016.<br>Prof. Luhrs research interests are concentrated on functional materials, from tailored synthetic pathways for their fabrication and the characterization of their structures-properties to their properties and failure mechanisms. Recent projects include the use of additive manufacturing techniques. Her work aims to understand the correlations between structural features and the materials reactivity, thermal, electrical and mechanical properties. Application projects with naval relevance include the generation of materials for sensors, batteries, supercapacitors and structural components.
