Dr. Smith is a Research Professor of Physics at the Naval Postgraduate School with active research in the areas of nuclear energy, radiation detection technology, nuclear weapons technology and nuclear forensics. He received his B.S. Engineering, summa cum laude at UCLA in 1971 and his Ph.D. in Nuclear Science and Engineering, also at UCLA in 1975. He serves as the US observer representative to the Generation IV International Forum System Steering Committee for the Lead-cooled Fast Reactor and is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and the Association for the Advancement of Science.
