Overview

David Ortiz-Suslow is a research professor within the Department of Meteorology at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. His research aims to improve the parameterization and modeling of the physical interactions between the atmosphere and ocean. David is an experimental physicist by training, earning a Bachelors of Science in Physics at UC San Diego (2011) and a doctorate in Applied Marine Physics from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami (2017). For his graduate work, he studied with Prof. Brian Haus in the Alfred C. Glassel Jr., SUSTAIN laboratory; and prior to joining the Meteorology Department faculty, he was a postdoctoral research associate with Prof. Qing Wang within the Boundary Layer Processes Group at NPS.
Other Experience
  • 2017 - 2019 Postdoctoral Research Associate, Naval Postgraduate School
  • 2017 - 2017 Postdoctoral Scholar, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami
  • 2012 - 2017 Graduate Research Assistant, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami
Research Interests
I am primarily interested in the physical mechanisms coupling the atmosphere and ocean and how these interactions impact physical (and other) processes on both sides of the air-water boundary. Specifically, I am interested in how we model and parameterize the turbulent exchange (or flux) across the interface, the impact of ocean surface waves on atmospheric turbulence, and the affect near-surface oceanic processes have on the propagation of energy within the marine atmosphere. I have a particular interest and focus on the coastal region, where the confluence of complex physics and human presence creates a rich and interesting domain for study. The coasts also happen to be where the surf is. I am primarily an experimentalist, but through my own work and collaborations with colleagues, I also conduct theoretical and numerical air-sea interaction studies.
