Dr. Jomana Amara
Vice Provost for Academic Leadership
Jomana Amara, Ph.D., P.E., is the Vice Provost for Academic Leadership at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and Professor of Economics in the Department of Defense Management. Prior to her appointment as Vice Provost, she held the position of Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and Professor of Economics in the Defense Resources Management Institute. Dr. Amara was elected to various positions in the Faculty Council including Faculty Chair.
She earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Ph.D. in Economics. Before joining the Naval Postgraduate School, she had a successful corporate career with Shell Oil Company leading efforts across multiple locations to upgrade and modernize refining and petrochemical facilities.
Dr. Amara is a Fulbright Scholar and was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Honor and Achievement of Civilians with the Department of Defense in recognition of her contributions and accomplishments in direct support of the forces who are engaged in operations throughout the world Her current research interests focus on defense industrial policy and offsets, examining the state of competition and the capacity to assess competition post consolidation; women in the military with an emphasis on the role of women in the force of the future, their service, performance, and health; examining military alliances specifically NATO; health economics, concentrating on military and veterans’ health care and well-being especially in the aftermath of traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis. In addition to publishing articles in top journals in economics, security studies, military health, and medicine, Dr. Amara is the co-author of the book, The U.S. Defence Economy (Cambridge University Press, Dec 2022) and co-editor of Military Medicine: From Pre-Deployment to Post-Separation. She currently serves on the editorial board of Defence and Peace Economics and has chaired and organized multiple sessions on the economics of security, and women and the force of the future.
