Design of Cyber Operations Capabilities for Software Defined Networks

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new approach to the observe, orient, decide and act (OODA) loop in computer networks and offers unparalleled insight in support of cyber operations. The proposed research focuses on developing cyber technology to enhance the security and awareness of Navy networks. There are two distinct goals with this research. The first goal of the research is to demonstrate a method to manage a SDN over wide area network (WAN) such as NIPRnet or the NMCI (Part 1). The second goal is to develop defensive cyber techniques that can be used by the controller in a SDN to fingerprint unknown devices, isolate malicious behavior, identify dual-homed devices, and identify devices running a virtual host (Part 2).
