CNAF turns to NPS to take on Naval Aviation Readiness

In the fall of 2017, U.S. Navy aviation faced a daunting challenge. The preceding five years had seen a surge in aviation mishaps, and aircraft readiness levels across the Fleet had reached unacceptable levels. Incidents involving F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets, for example, had more than doubled over this time, and the Navy testified to Congress that only 31 percent - 170 aircraft - of the Navy’s 542 Super Hornets were ready to “fight tonight.”

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Following a comprehensive review of potential candidates, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson selected Fleet Master Chief Russell Smith to be the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Aug. 29.
“After a thorough and deliberate review process, I am confident that Fleet Master Chief Smith is the right leader to be our Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy,” said Richardson.

Top Gun Turns to NPS Executive Education to Prep for Major Expansion

“Top Gun” is due for an upgrade. And no, it’s not the upcoming sequel to the classic 1986 film due out next summer.
The ranges at Naval Air Station Fallon (NASF) in rural western Nevada – the epicenter of naval aviation combat training – have not seen a significant modernization in more than 20 years. Since then, the exponential evolution of aircraft and long-range weapons technologies have made Fallon Range Training Complex (FRTC) too small for pilots to realistically train for combat.

Ms. Winli McAnally, director of the university’s Center for Executive Education (CEE), is pictured with CEE team members Jenna DeDominici, right, and Ben Quismundo, left, following the announcement of her reappointment as CEE director, a position she has held since March of 2015.
“I manage 20 CEE faculty as well as our small team of exceptional staff members. With them, and other key NPS faculty, we support up to 800 Navy senior leaders every year,” said McAnally.
