Certificate in ASW Fundamentals
The curriculum for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Certificate Program supports the needs of the Navy in ASW, and complements existing warfare ASW training and qualification.
The ASW Certificate Program provides a science and engineering foundation which covers fundamental concepts in four areas: Physical Oceanography, Signal Processing, Operations Research, and Engineering Acoustics. These subjects are the educational cornerstone for this highly interdisciplinary certificate program.
The ASW Certificate can be completed as a Distance Learning program that consists of four fully accredited courses delivered in the Asynchronous and Collaborate format as described in our list of modes of instruction. Offered over a fifteen month period, these courses develop critical analytic skills and an understanding of the fundamental principles applied in ASW.
Naval officers who complete the ASW Certificate can receive the 6301L code to document their achievement.
New applications are being accepted for the April 2020 start. To be considered for this start, an online application, transcripts, and Participation Agreement must be received by Jan 6, 2020.

*Per OPNAVINST 1520.23C, a Navy officer will incur a 1 year service obligation upon completion or withdrawal from the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Certificate Program.

The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) program is sponsored by N97 for qualified DoD applicants. There is no tuition required from DoD students or their commands. ASW also allows a small number of defense contractors and international students into the program at a cost of approximately $2500 per student/course.
The cost for textbooks is approximately $100 for new texts.

Distance Learning: Engineering Acoustics Curriculum (535)
Successful maritime dominance and port security depend on a workforce which understands the principles of sonar engineering. Sonar systems are deployed from surface, air, submarine and (more recently) unmanned platforms in countless different forms to detect, classify, localize, track, and neutralize submerged targets. Due to the unique military relevance of engineering acoustics, NPS has long been a leader in this field. The ECE and Physics Departments have an interdisciplinary degree program at both the Masters and Ph.D. level in Engineering Acoustics dating back to the early 1970's. These degrees address the Navy's continuing need for DoD personnel educated in the fundamental science and engineering underlying sonar systems. Students in the Engineering Acoustics curriculum can choose between two degree options, the Master of Science in Engineering Acoustics (MSEA) which requires the completion of a thesis or the Master of Engineering Acoustics (MEA) which substitutes a capstone course for the thesis. The Distance Learning (DL) Engineering Acoustics program brings the strength of the resident courses together with proven DL technology and faculty expertise to deliver unique degree programs in engineering acoustics.
Resident: Undersea Warfare Curriculum (525)
Students with an ASW Certificate are well positioned to continue their education and professional development by pursuing a Masters degree through Undersea Warfare (USW) curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The Undersea Warfare Curriculum educates officers in the engineering fundamentals, physical principles and analytical concepts that govern operational employment of undersea warfare (USW) sensors and weapons. The USW program is interdisciplinary and integrates many subjects: acoustics, electrical, and mechanical engineering; mathematics; oceanography; physics; operations analysis; and unmanned systems.
Students in the Undersea Warfare Curriculum can choose from a variety of technical degrees including:

- Master of Science in Physical Oceanography
- Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
- Master of Science in Operations Research
- Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
- Master of Science in Applied Mathematics
- Master of Science in Applied Physics
This curriculum is designed to allow the student to meet all of the requirements for Navy PME (as established by the Chief of Naval Operations) and for Joint PME (as established by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff) for Intermediate Level Professional Military Education.
