Abstract

Modern society is heavily dependent on energy, but as demand grows, providing an adequate supply is ever more challenging. In the 20th century, oil was the strategic commodity, in large part because of the phenomenal success of the oil industry in delivering petroleum to market. Its role is changing in the 21st century, but it is still an indispensable component of the energy portfolio.
