Continued Success for Applied Mathematics' Network Science Certificate

By Javier Chagoya

NPS Department of Applied Mathematics Professor and Chair Craig Rasmussen, far left, and Network Science Program Coordinator Associate Professor Ralucca Gera, center, are pictured with the latest students to complete the department's Network Science Certificate program, March 23. Faculty and colleagues were on hand to recognize the second cohort of students to complete the program at NPS.

"Networks are everywhere, and their understanding provides information for decision makers and researchers, leading to predictive models of the complex systems they model," said Gera.

The Network Science Certificate provides an interdisciplinary education using mathematical methods for the analysis, understanding and exploitation of complex networks, which includes technological, biological and social networks.

"The analysis of complex networks is used in interdisciplinary research through network analytic methods from physics, computer science, operations research, math, or statistics. Network Science aids in making sense of big data structures through these analytics in order to build an underlying framework to understand physical, biological, and social systems," explained Gera.

Pictured, from left to right, are Marine Corps Capt. Erik Rye, Cmdr. Gary Lazzaro, Gera, Singapore Navy ME5 Woei Chieh Lee, Army Capt. Russell Nelson and Army Capt. Matthew Fletcher.
