Asynchronous Appointments

What is an asynchronous appointment?

With asynchronous appointment, students submit a draft to the writing center for feedback without a real-time 1-to-1 in-person session. The instructor reads your work and emails you the feedback within two days.

Who should use asynchronous appointments?

Async appointments are ideal for students stationed aboard ship, in a different time zone, or working full-time. Async appointments also work well for follow-up appointments, when you’ve already met with an instructor on a first draft and need a second review.

How it works:

  1. Go to WCOnline and select the async calendar from the menu at the top of the page.
  1. Select an open slot on the day you’d like feedback and fill out the appointment form.
  1. Email your instructor a draft of your paper 48 hours in advance. (Papers received under 48 hours in advance may receive limited feedback.)
  1. Your instructor will email your feedback by close of business the day of your appointment.

Important:

Asynchronous appointments are not an editing or proofreading service. Just like regular GWC appointments, instructors mainly provide feedback on critical thinking, argument, paper structure, and writing mechanics. If your draft exceeds 2500 words, your instructor may recommend multiple async appointments.

You are free to communicate with your writing instructor on the appointment form or through email about your paper, the assignment, and any concerns.
