MAE - Robotics - Resident Certificate

Robotics Engineering Certificate (Resident)

HOW TO APPLY

Applications to a primary curriculum are handled through the Office of Admissions: Applying to NPS.

Resident students may request addition of the Robotics Engineering Certificate (224) to their primary program of study by completing the Academic Certificate Enrollment Request Form, available from the NPS Registrar’s website.

The certificate requires students to complete four graduate courses (3000 or 4000 level) related to robotics, unmanned and autonomous systems.
Academic Catalog: Curriculum 224

When submitting the Academic Certificate Enrollment Request Form, students should list the four courses they propose to fulfill the certificate requirements.  The following list of eligible courses are prequalified to be acceptable to fulfill the certificate requirements and may be combined in any order to fulfill the course requirements:

Fundamentals (select 1):

EC4310 Fundamentals of Robotics
CS4313 Advanced Robotic Systems
ME3720 Introduction to Unmanned Systems

Electives (select 3):

AE4850 Dynamic Optimization
CS4310 Sensory Artificial Intelligence
CS4315 Introduction to Machine Learning and Data Mining
ME3420 Computational Foundations for Robotics
ME4500/AE4500 Advanced Space Flight Mechanics and Orbital Robotics
ME4800/AE4800 Machine Learning for Autonomous Operations
ME4811 Multivariable Control of Ship Systems
ME4821 Marine Navigation
ME4822 Guidance, Navigation and Control of Marine Systems
ME4823 Cooperative Control of Multiple Marine Autonomous Vehicles

Students may propose alternative courses to count toward the four-course requirement via the Certificate Exception Request Form, located on the registrar’s website.  The alternate courses should be pre-coordinated prior to applying for the certificate.  This may be achieved by routing the completed Exception Request to the RBE Program Officer and Academic Associate.

Students may propose special topics courses, e.g., ME4901, as alternative courses, but the particular offering must be a complete, technical course covering relevant material with multiple students, a syllabus, assignments, exams or projects, etc.  Course material must be submitted with the exception request.  Independent study versions of such special topics courses cannot be used to fulfill the certificate course requirements.

To apply for the certificate, complete the following steps:

If you are proposing alternate courses, submit the Certificate Exception Request Form form by email to robotics.certificate@nps.edu with “Resident Certificate” in the subject line.  Unless directed otherwise by the AA or PO, select “One-time Exception – Course Requirements/ Substitutions” in block III.  This will start the review by Academic Associate (Professor Bingham) and Program Officer (CDR Arledge).  Once the form is signed, a copy will be returned to you by email. Do not proceed with the next step until you have department approval for your plan of study.

Complete the  Academic Certificate Enrollment Request Form.  The department will submit the certificate exception request concurrently, if applicable.  This form is submitted via PowerAutomate and will automatically route to the approval chain.

Students may request including course in the certificate that are not listed above.  Such alternate courses should be proposed by listing them in the “Department Approved Certificate Courses” section of the form.  Students must also enclose the course description, a current syllabus of the course and a brief statement of applicability for the requested course.  Such exceptions to the standard course list will be considered in a case-by-case bases and will require approval of the Academic Council.
