This graduate certificate is designed for NPS students and military educators interested in developing the mathematical, pedagogical, and instructional expertise needed to teach mathematics effectively in military, collegiate, and technical education environments.  It is focused on NPS graduate students to become effective instructors of undergraduate mathematics within military academic environments.

Who is Eligible?

  • NPS students seeking advanced preparation in collegiate mathematics instruction.
  • Priority is given to students whose career paths include faculty positions in the Mathematics Dept at NPS, USNA, USMA, & USCGA.
  • Interested participants must be able to take MA3607 (Real Analysis) during the Spring quarter of their 1st year of studies, in order to take the MA4100 courses below.

Real Analysis: Mathematical Depth for Clear Calculus Instruction

MA3607 develops the deeper mathematical understanding, grounding calculus instruction in  rigorous theory, precision, and conceptual clarity. Students master real analysis so they can explain foundational ideas, connect theory to computation, and help future learners understand why calculus works—not only how to perform procedures—and teach calculus with confidence, depth and mathematial rigor.

Tutoring in the Math Acceleration Lab and Diagnostic Pedagogy

MA4100 prepares students for diagnostic tutoring through practicing questioning strategies and evidence-based instructional interventions. Students learn to identify misconceptions, give targeted feedback, and guide learners' math reasoning. Additionally, they learn the influence of mathematics throughout military and scientific history, highlighting its role in developing strategic thinkers, military leaders, and scientists.

Naval Postgraduate School

Teaching Practicum in MA1113 (Calculus I) and MA1114 (Calculus II) at NPS 

MA4101 and MA4102 provide supervised teaching practica in Calculus I and Calculus II. Students design lessons, co-teach weekly in NPS’s refresher classroom environments, receive faculty feedback, and refine their instructional practice thorugh direct classroom experience teaching NPS graduate students, gaining the real-world instrutional expertise essential for effective collegiate mathematics teaching in military GradEd.

Developed by the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School in 2026, the certificate combines advanced mathematical content knowledge, evidence-based teaching practices, diagnostic tutoring, and mentored classroom instruction.
