FY22 NRP Deckplate Innovation Study Challenge (DISC)!!

We are pleased to announce the first annual Deckplate Innovation Study Challenge (DISC)!!

For the FY22 DISC, we are accepting research topic submissions that focus on: "How Current Technology can..."

Simplify or improve operations Save material and property
Save time required to accomplish a task Save manpower or money
Speed up production Promote health
Increase output and enhance productivity Increase safety

Challenge winners will have the opportunity to meet and partner with the respective Fleet Science Advisor and NPS Faculty Member selected to conduct their study. Temporary duty assignment travel funding to Monterey, CA for the topic challenge winners will be provided by the NRP.  [DISC Instruction - PDF]

This challenge competition is open to Navy and Marine Corps Junior Officers (O1-O2) and enlisted Sailors and Marines (E1-E5). One primary project will be selected from each group for a total of two selected.

  • Evaluation Criteria. The annual Naval Research Program Topic Review Board (TRB) will judge ideas according to the following evaluation criteria:
  • Relevance:
    • Idea does not just merely call attention to the need for routine maintenance and repair or for purchasing ordinary supplies and materials.
    • Suggestions relating only to personal comfort, convenience, or desires of the suggester and are of no benefit to other personnel.
    • Suggestions that existing rules, regulations, or directives be enforced
  • Applicability: Submission specifies the population to which this idea would apply.
  • Creativity: Idea applies existing technologies in a new way.
  • Feasibility: Submission includes brief description of how the idea could realistically be implemented.

  • Feasibility: Submission includes brief description of how the idea could realistically be implemented.

This competition is open until 24 March 2021 to receive submissions. Any submission received after midnight PST on 24 March 2021, will be ineligible.

  • Once submissions have been verified the topics will be paired and assigned to the respective Fleet and Fleet Marine Force Science Advisor for representation to the NRP.
  • Next step is that eligible Naval Postgraduate School faculty will submit an Initial Research Estimate Form (IREF) against submitted topics. These IREFs will have a budget of $50K and are intended to be quick-turn projects that can be completed in 3-6 months.
  • Final selection will occur at the annual Topic Review Board (TRB). The TRB members will review submissions and the submitter and PI of the winning submission will be notified along with the release of all NRP selected projects.

Submit ideas electronically: Login to the NRP Topic Portal using CAC authentication and submit your idea via the Create Topic form.
