Foreign Area Officer (FAO) Chair

COL John Zavage earned his commission from the United States Military Academy in 1994 as a second lieutenant in the Infantry.  His Infantry assignments included Airborne Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Staff Officer in the 1st Bn, 508th Airborne Battalion Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy, from which he deployed twice to Tuzla, Bosnia.  COL Zavage also served as a company commander in the UN Security Battalion-Joint Security Area in Pan Mun Jom, Korea, and as an observer/controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

In 2005 COL Zavage transferred to the Foreign Area Officer (FAO) Corps as a Middle East FAO and is currently assigned as the FAO Chair at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.  His prior FAO assignments include Senior Defense Official/Defense Attaché to Yemen (operating in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia); Chief, Levant Branch, Security Cooperation Division, USCENTCOM J5 at Macdill AFB, FL; and Pol/Mil Advisor to the 4th Infantry Division Commander and III Corps Commander at Fort Hood, Texas, from which he deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

COL Zavage has completed the US Army’s Ranger School, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Jumpmaster School, and the Basic Arabic Course at the Defense Language Institute.  He holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Arts from Harvard University, and Master of Strategic Studies from the Air War College.
