The Value of Training; Preparing Mentally for the High End Fight

Date: May 24, 2023
Time: 1000-1500 Pacific
Location: 109 Glasgow Hall
Forum: In Person

Two speakers combine to deliver a powerful warfighter message targeted to NPS students: 1) Commander, Naval Forces Pacific Force Master Chief FORCM (SW/AW) Greg S. Carlson will talk about his experiences and lessons learned as a Sailor on USS COLE. 2) CAPT Tara Smith, Commander, Naval Surface Forces Force Mental Health Officer, will give a presentation on how we as leaders can proactively build warrior toughness and resiliency, while also discussing how we can recognize and manage operational stress in ourselves. FORCM Carlson’s presentation focuses on his experiences and lessons learned as a Sailor on USS COLE, followed by a presentation by CAPT Smith on how we, as leaders, can proactively build cohesive teams, warrior toughness, and resiliency, while also discussing how we can recognize and manage operational stress in ourselves. This same presentation was delivered to every Triad in the surface force at last fall’s Command Leadership Symposium – it was truly impactful and memorable. Regardless of your military branch or designator, as a future combat leader you need to hear their message!
