Temporary Access Pass (TAP) for New NPS Users
All new users receive an email with the Username (Email address) and Temporary Access Pass (TAP) code for the initial sign-in. A TAP is a time-limited passcode that can be configured for single use. All new users will sign-in with a TAP to onboard other passwordless authentication methods, such as Phone Sign-in from the Microsoft Authenticator App.
1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app for your phone from the Android or iOS application store.
2. Add an account by locating the "+" or "add account" button.
3. Select the "Work or school account".
4. Select "Sign in".
5. Sign in with your provided Username (email address) that you received on your New User Instructions email.
6. Enter your Temporary Access Pass (TAP) code that you received on your New User Instructions email.
Note: Your TAP is case-sensitive.
7. "Sign in with your phone" for passwordless authentication and select "Continue".
8. A prompt will emerge "Adding Account".
9. Status will show green checkmarks after registering and select "Continue".
If it fails, please review settings or contact the TAC for assistance.
10. The Naval Postgraduate School account will be added, select the newly created account.
Set your Password
11. Select "Change password" in the account menu or go to
https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/.
12. This will open in your browser. Enter your NPS email address and select "Next".
13. Passwordless sign-in will prompt.
14. Switch to the Microsoft Authenticator app notification and enter the number to match.
15. In your web browser, you can choose to stay signed in or not.
16. In this section, select "Forgot your password?".
17. Enter Username (email address) and CAPTCHA and select "Next".
18. Choose "I forgot my password" to continue.
19. Verification Step 1
Select "Approve a notification on my authenticator app" or "Enter a code from my authenticator app".
Select "Send Notification" to the Microsoft Authenticator app or "Enter your verification code" from the app (One-Time password code).
20. Verification Step 2
Email or Text a second verification to a SAAR approved personal email or phone number.
22. Enter a new password and select "Finish".
The requirements for NPS passwords are as follows:
- Passwords will be set to a minimum of 15 characters
- Passwords may not contain a word in any language
- Passwords may not be an exact repeat of the last 26 passwords
- Passwords require at least two characters from all four categories:
- At least two (2) lowercase letters (a, b, c,...)
- At least two (2) UPPERCASE letters (A, B, C,...)
- At least two (2) numbers (1, 2, 3,...)
- At least two (2) special characters ($, %, #,...)

How to configure my NPS email using the Outlook App
Setup Outlook for iOS for the first time
- Open the Outlook for iOS app on your iOS device.
- Select Add Account to add one of your existing email accounts, or Create New Account if you want to create a new Microsoft account.
If you select Add Account, enter your email address and follow the prompts to authenticate the account.
- Outlook may detect and pre-select your email account. Tap Continue to add that account or tap Skip to enter the email address of a different account and follow the prompts to verify the account.
- Multi-factor authentication is enabled for your email account, follow the instructions to verify the account.
Set up Outlook for Android for the first time
- Open the Outlook for Android app on your Android device.
- Select Add Account to add one of your existing email accounts, or Create New Account if you want to create a new Microsoft account.
If you select Add Account, enter your email address and follow the prompts to authenticate the account.
- Outlook may detect and pre-select your email account. Tap Continue to add that account or tap Skip this account to enter the email address of a different account and follow the prompts to verify the account.
- Multi-factor authentication is enabled for your email account, follow the instructions to verify the account.
How to Perform a Self-Service Password Reset
Utilize https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/ for a self-service password reset.
1. Add username (email address) and CAPTCHA and then select "Next".
2. Choose "I forgot my password" to continue.
3. Select "Approve a notification on my authenticator app" or "Enter a code from my authenticator app".
Select "Send Notification" to the Microsoft Authenticator app or "Enter your verification code" from the app.
6. Enter a new password and select "Finish".
