Medical Travel

Various types of medical travel may be authorized for Service members, civilian employees, and dependents.  This site serves to address policy and procedures for the most common type of medical travel at NPS: Medical Specialty Care Travel of More Than 100 Miles

For all other types of medical travel, please consult JTR Chapter 3, Part D and the NPS Travel Office. 

Patient is a Service Member


 

Please submit a Travel Request Worksheet throught the Virtual Travel Assistant with a copy of your appointment slip or order from your primary care manager (PCM).  For Navy students, please coordinate funding approval through Student Services.  For Navy staff and faculty, please coordinate funding approval through Command Administration.  For all other Service members, please coordinate through your service to have a cross-organizational line of accounting (cross-org LOA) made available for your medical travel.

Patient is a Dependent


 

To qualify for medical travel reimbursement, dependent must meet the following criteria:
 
  • Enrolled in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote
  • Be non-active duty member or a medal-of-honor veteran
  • Have a referral from your PCM, authorized by TRICARE, to a specialty care provider more than 100 miles, one way, from the PCM ZIP code
  • Have no other specialty care providers closer to PCM who can meet your medical/behavioral needs.

For military PCMs - contact the travel representative at your military hospital or clinic.

Non-Medical Attendendant

A non-medical attendant (NMA) is a person who travels with a patient to a medical appointment for the purpose of attending to the needs of the patient due to age, physical or mental incapacity of the patient.  Orders may be issued for an NMA when a pateint's PCM determines it is medically necessary. Only one NMA is authorized IAW the Joint Travel Regulations. NMAs must be at least 21 years of age unless he/she is the parent or designated guardian of the patient.

Patient is a Service Member

When an NMA letter is provided by a PCM for an NMA to accompany a Service member to a medical appointment, an invitational travel authorization may be issued 

For Navy staff and faculty, please coordinate funding approval through Command Administration. Navy students will coordinate funding approval through Student Services.  Once funding is approved, the NPS Travel Office will work with you to generate orders for the NMA. Please refer to the Invitational Travel SOP and NPS Travel Office for additional information.

For all other Service members, please coordinate through your service to issue orders for your approved NMA.

Patient is a Dependent

Approved NMA travel will be coordinated and processed through the TRICARE Prime Travel Benefits Office.  Additonal information will be provided by the TRICARE Prime Travel Benefits Office when arranging the patient's travel.
