About Us

The NPS USW program is open to qualified US and international military officers and civil-service employees. To qualify for the NPS USW program, you must have a Bachelor’s degree and have completed sufficient calculus and calculus-based physics courses to earn an academic profile code (APC) of 323. You may apply at any time through our Admissions Office. Early application to the university is recommended so there is time to gather transcripts and for NPS to evaluate your records. If selected, students work through their detailer or personnel office on quota allotments and transfer dates. Students may begin the program in March or September.

Distance Learning

The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Certificate Program

The curriculum for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Certificate Program supports the needs of the Navy in ASW, and complements existing warfare ASW training and qualification.

The ASW Certificate Program provides a science and engineering foundation which covers fundamental concepts in four areas: Physical Oceanography, Signal Processing, Operations Research, and Engineering Acoustics. These subjects are the educational cornerstone for this highly interdisciplinary certificate program.

Anti-Submarine Warfare encompasses multiple disciplines. The ASW Certificate is a distance Learning curriculum that consists of four fully accredited courses delivered by multiple modes of instruction. Offered over a one-year period, these courses develop critical analytic skills and understanding of fundamental principles applied in ASW.

Naval officers who complete the ASW Certificate receive the 6301L code to document their achievement.

It is a fully online, four-quarter program that can be completed from nearly anywhere and is open to military, civilian and contractor personnel.  Click on the below link to learn more at the ASW Certificate distance learning site:

Master of Science in Engineering Acoustics

The Naval Postgraduate School and its Engineering Acoustics Academic Committee are pleased to announce plans to offer distance learning (DL) Masters programs of study in Engineering Acoustics (MEA and MSEA) beginning Tuesday, 5 July 2016.  The academic character of the programs in Engineering Acoustics is interdisciplinary, with courses and laboratory work drawn principally from the fields of physics and electrical engineering. Although broadly based, the emphasis of the programs is on those aspects of acoustics and signal processing applicable to undersea warfare. Subjects covered include the generation, propagation and reception of sound in the ocean; military applications of underwater sound; and acoustic signal processing and communications.
