Current Research Programs

Dr. Gemba conducts research in experimental ocean acoustics and physics-informed signal processing. He is interested in:

  • Acoustic signal and array processing in the presence of environmental noise
  • Understanding the ocean's response to basin-scale very-low frequency transmissions with applications to undersea positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) and to validating and improving Navy oceanographic forward models
  • Statistical signal processing and passive detection / localization of low-level acoustic sources
  • Basin-scale Non-Traditional Acoustic Communications (NTAC)
  • Using transiting surface ships as sources of opportunity or environmental noise for the purpose of array and environmental-parameter characterization

Available Thesis Topics

  • Detection and localization of submerged sources in deep water environments
  • Environmental noise characterization
  • Investigations into the interaction between Oceanography and Acoustics
  • Signal processing evaluation of sensor systems
  • Acoustic remote sensing of the ocean
