Welcome

Welcome to the RoboDojo Community Website!

The RoboDojo is a dynamic innovation space (located on NPS campus in Root Hall, Room 125) where students, staff, faculty, and friends can come 'tinker' and learn about robot components and systems. Whether you're five or seventy-five years old, the RoboDojo is designed to promote informal hands-on learning with open hours and volunteer mentors to help the NPS community learn about:

  • rapid prototyping (e.g, with 3D printers and laser cutters);
  • embedded computing (e.g., with Arduino and Raspberry Pi);
  • basic electronics (e.g., with various electronics and breadboard components);
  • robotic software programming (e.g., for Robot Operating System in Python);
  • and more!

The RoboDojo also hosts various community-led workshops, including recent gatherings on topics ranging from Basics of Solidworks, Intro to Printed Circuit Boards, to Laser Cutting and Engraving, and a Raspberry Pi Workshop.  The RoboDojo represents a grassroots initiative to promote collaborative and community learning, so feel free to stop by and learn about robots!

What is it?: We're your NPS FREE community maker lab for learning about robotics and electronics!
The RoboDojo offers tools, equipment, hands-on workshops, competitions, and user groups around rapid prototyping and emerging technologies.
Where: Root 125 A/B/C
Open:  Monday->Thursday 0900-1500   Friday: Varies according to lab support

News:
  • Come by and see the new RoboDojo Shop! This space will house all of our milling and safety-related equipment. Thank you to the NPS Safety team, Public Works, and the Makers Club for helping us get this space available to the campus. You'll see this space open more once all of our safety protocols and procedures are completely vetted.
  • Interested in combat robots? The RoboDojo will be welcoming West Point's LTC James Finocchiaro to speak about his Mech Warfare combat robot hobby. Think remotely-controlled competition robots with airsoft guns. Date TBD..
  • CPT Matthew Rogers is seeking a team who might join him in building a life-sized motorized R3D2. Email him directly for more information.
Come say hello to our very capable STG1 Corey Cauffiel and ET1 Andy Reagan who are in the lab to support lab users with their projects and questions.

We are open other hours for workshops and for other events and would welcome the opportunity to show you our lab resources and to discuss your thesis and personal projects.

2. New Gear and Space

Maker Mondays are here!
Stop by the lab any Monday between 1200-1300 to talk with us about the RoboDojo, to see what we offer, and to discuss how we might support your work. We've dedicated this time to work with you and to answer your questions.

The RoboDojo is working on our new milling/safety space located right next to our laser room! Come on by and see this space develop during this quarter.

3. RoboDojo Workshop Schedule:

There's always something new to learn in the RoboDojo! You can learn how to work with neural networks in Matlab, exercise your programming skills with Javascript, and learn about Arduinos. There are lots of drone-related learning opportunities, too.  You can rapidly prototype parts with our 3D printers, laser, circuit board printer, and other equipment. We'll have Navy Reservists, campus visitors, and many other students, staff, and faculty members from all departments at NPS talking about their projects and providing a number of hands-on free learning sessions.
