Course Description:
The course provides you with the fundamentals for understanding networks functionality, networks system behavior, the concepts of their integration and operation. The course is based on thorough analysis of such critical aspects as Transmission media, Packet Networking LAN, WAN, Internet, Enterprise, and Tactical networking. The course also develops good theoretical foundation for addressing the challenges of emerging networking systems application to the evolving surface, land, aerial, and space tactical environments.
The hands-on studies are based on the series of labs and demonstrations of field trials in the environment of the NPS Tactical Networking Testbed, which is comprised of major experimentation clusters in Camp Roberts, SF Bay, Monterey Bay, Baltics, and Mediterranean.
The laboratories include such topics as: IEEE standards for physical layer, Switch and Router configuration, VLAN technique of networking.
The study of network applications will be based on the emerging systems for:
- Sensor tactical mesh networking (ISR sensors, SE, biometrics, CBRN, etc)
- Small unit P2P mesh networks
- Networking with USVs and UAVs
- Satellite networking
- Ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore networks
- NATO and Coalition Warrior data sharing networks
- MIMO, UWB, 4G/LTE mobile networking
- Wearable and Near field networking, sensor suits, etc.
Course Description:
The course provides you with an analytical background and hands-on experience in tactical and wireless networking. It is based on lessons learned during experimental studies of tactical sensor-unmanned systems-decision maker networks. The course also develops a good theoretical foundation for addressing the challenges of emerging networking systems transfer to the evolving surface, land, aerial, and space tactical environments.
The hands-on studies are based on the unique NPS Tactical Networking Testbed, which is comprised of major experimentation clusters in Camp Roberts, SF Bay, Monterey Bay, the Baltics, and the Mediterranean.
The study of tactical networking solutions will include such aspects as:
- WiMax Maritime and Land networks
- MIMO, UWB, 4G/LTE mobile networking
- Wearable MANET Networks
- Networking with USVs and UAVs (Way point control, autonomy windows)
- Satellite ship-to-ship and C2 reachback mesh networks
Course Description: In this course, students initiate research activities on emerging network-enabled systems. We base our study on the foundations of systems theory, large-scale systems design, and experimentation methods. The course is structured in three phases, during which you will design your own notional Large-Scale System Experimentation Plan.
Phase I. We develop systems thinking techniques and an understanding of fundamental system properties, such as network connectivity, complexity, feedback, self-organization, adaptation and synergy.
End product: A paper that will constitute the lit review section of your final experiment plan.
Phase II. We focus on network systems design and integration frameworks based on multiple criteria experimentation with systems constraints. Design examples include; integration of a tactical sensor-unmanned vehicle network, total ship engineering case studies, etc.
End product: An experimentation design concept and requirements description for your selected networking system. This will constitute the 2nd section of your final experimentation plan.
Phase III. We discuss the design and analysis of your experiment steps. We target the study of emerging self-organizing, collaborative, adaptive network-enabled warfare environments. Examples include; Tactical Network Topology (TNT) experiments (SOCOM-HVT/MIO); the Global NPS-LLNL Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) Experimentation Testbed; an Empire Challenge Experiment; or a CA Homeland Security Program.
End product: Your finalized experiment design plan, in which you present a holistic behavior model (self-organization, adaptation, collaboration, etc) for your selected system, and your “discovery” type experiment plan for your proposed model. Your plan comprises the details that complete your notional experimentation design, and completes your final class project, which you present to the class.
Course Description:
The course provides you with an analytical background and hands-on experience with management systems and integrating management infrastructure into the information grid design. It targets operations support for:
- Tactical Sensor-Unmanned Vehicle networks
- Global Information Grid services
- Terrestrial, satellite, and mobile wireless network operation centers
We will look at fixed, vehicle-based, and man-packable Network Operations Center (NOC) solutions. We’ll also examine management challenges associated with deploying adaptive, self-forming/ self-healing mesh networks. These networks will contain unmanned vehicles, sensors, and geographically dispersed operators.
At the center of analytical work is a project-based study of management functions and information models for TMN architectures, SNMP management information bases (MIB), management agent platforms, and knowledge based management concepts. This is combined with experimentation work at the Center for Network Innovation and Experimentation (CENETIX), including physical integration of NOC elements and monitoring of an ongoing experiment.
For your primary class project, you will integrate and manage geographically distributed, fixed and mobile Operation Centers based on the NPS Tactical Network Testbed (TNT) and Maritime Interdiction Operation (MIO) experimentation experiences. Examples include managing:
- Tactical ad hoc mobile SOF networks (ATAK, RAA)
- Tactical satellite networks ( Ka-band, X-band)
- Littoral Mesh Networks
- Unmanned Systems Networks
- Managing CWMD detection and interdiction networks (MIO, C-WMD experiments)
- Networking by NFC touch (divers, boarding teams, UASs)
These experiments have been historically sponsored by USSOCOM, and this year supported by OSD-CWMD Program ( Constellation Project), DTRA, ONR, and the USMC which are among our key customers.
We will use various software tools, including Solar Winds, Code Mettle, NeuralStar, Redline RF tool, NPS management tools, and NPS Network-Aware Situational Awareness agents to support your project work and NOC technology experimentation.
