"Integrative design" is a proven but little-known and rarely-practiced way to make energy savings (or other resource savings) severalfold larger, yet cheaper, and often with increasing returns. It optimizes buildings, vehicles, equipment, factories, or processes as whole systems for multiple benefits, rather than as isolated parts for single benefits. Practical case-studies from all end-use sectors and many applications illustrate the power and wide applicability of integrative design, including for the Navy’s mission.


Amory B. Lovins has been active in over 70 countries for a half-century as an innova­tor and practitioner in energy and its links to security, development, environment, and economy. A Swedish engineering academician, former Oxford don, honorary US architect, and 2011–18 member of the National Petroleum Council, he has briefed over 40 heads of state, advised industries and govern­ments world­wide (as well as DoD and DOE) mainly on advanced energy and resource effici­en­cy. His current core focus is “integrative design” techniques.
