Abstract

This seminar will present the NAS Sigonella mission and the Energy Program implemented by Mr. Piluso for the past 20 years. The Navy top five energy security priority gaps will also be highlighted: energy reliability and resiliency, water reliability and resiliency, water consumption, and renewable energy. The presentation will include some of the projects that are filling the energy security gaps at NAS Sigonella, including PV carports, solar heating system for swimming pools and barracks, water conservation, increased water and energy efficiency, and the recent decarbonization efforts.

Biography

Mr. Piluso received the Laura (five-year degree, MS equivalent) in Microelectronics Engineering from the University of Catania – Italy and has been the Installation Energy Manager (IEM) at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, Sicily, Italy, since March 2003. He has scoped, designed, and managed several energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.   Since 2011, Mr. Piluso has been in charge of several million dollars project and developed the energy program achieving 37% energy reduction from the baseline. As IEM, he coordinates the work of Italian, U.S civilians, and contractors for several projects at NAS Sigonella.  Since 2019, he has been part of the microgrid research team lead by NPS to increase energy resilience on naval facilities.
