Biography
Captain Dan Verheul is an Associate Military Professor in the Department of National Security Affairs and Senior Intelligence Office at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.  He is a U.S. Navy Intelligence Officer specializing in Operational Intelligence, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance and Joint Planning.  He was also responsible for intelligence supporting Humanitarian Relief Operations for the Indonesian Tsunami Relief effort in 2005.  He has worked with industry, academia, and national labs on development of advanced non-traditional collection capabilities, collection concepts of operations, and support for special collection operations. 

Enlisting in the Navy in 1982, he earned his Aircrew Wings as an In-flight Technician in P-3s. Through the NROTC program he graduated from Florida State University in 1986 earning a Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs. He also earned a Master in Military Studies in 1999 from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College.

Commissioned in April 1987, he held various operational assignments in Indications and Warning, Collection, Targeting/Combat Assessment, Field Collection/Exploitation, and Joint Planning.  Sea duty and operational assignments include: Commander Middle East Force in Manama Bahrain, 1987-1988; Attack Squadron-34, 1988-1990; and Commander Seventh Fleet aboard USS Blue Ridge, 1995-1998. As the Senior Intelligence Officer for the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, 2002-2005, he was responsible for intelligence supporting Strike Group operations and was designated the Naval Forces N2 for Joint Task Force 536 supporting Operation Unified Assistance for the Indonesian Tsunami Relief effort in 2005. In 2007 he served as the Officer-In-Charge of a Joint Special Operations Command Task Force Fusion Cell.

Shore tours include: Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren’s J-Department, 1990-1993, OPNAV support to the Director Naval Intelligence, 1993-1995; DIA Congressional Liaison, 1999-2002; Deputy Chief of the Rapid Development & Technical Collection Division, DIA’s Directorate for Technical Collection, 2006-2009; Commanding Officer of DIA’s Navy Element, 2008; Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance/Director of Naval Intelligence, Special Assistant for Operational Intelligence Collection, 2010-2011. Special Assistant for Operational Intelligence Collection and Senior Liaison Officer to the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Task Force, 2012-2013.
