Mali 2012-2014: Governance, Rebellion, and Extremism: USG and International Community Response

Date: November 10, 2015 to November 10, 2015
Time: 1200 - 1330
Location: Glasgow Hall, Room 322

Mali's 2012 crisis reflected closely interlinked questions of domestic governance, internal rebellion, and extremist incursion.  The international community's response, including an early West African mediation lead, French military intervention, and a UN peacekeeping mission, addressed these same interlinked elements in tackling a reversal of that downward spiral in the context of a serious threat to regional and even international security.

Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, who served in Mali as Deputy Chief of Mission from 2006-2009, the State Department's Director of West African Affairs from 2009-2011, and Ambassador to Mali from 2011-2014, will reflect on the antecedents to and lessons of Mali's multifaceted crisis.
