NWSI hosts two research groups.

Research Groups dedicate NPS researchers (faculty and students) as direct support to Navy and Marine Corps operational commands, helping them to solve their highest priority and most pressing challenges.
  • These interdisciplinary groups are led by one faculty member and one military member.
  • The integration of the Research Group members into the supported command allows researchers to thoroughly understand the command’s challenges and then to work priority projects as cross-campus teams, collaborating and pooling resources when necessary.

Nimitz Research Group

The Nimitz Research Group, established in 2022, leverages NPS’ educational and research capabilities and institutional knowledge to counter security threats posed by the People’s Republic of China and others in the Indo-Pacific. NPS faculty and students work closely with regionally aligned operational commands to provide them additional research capacity and subject matter expertise.

Bucklew Research Group

The Bucklew Research Group supports Naval Special Warfare (NSW) through studies and research by Navy SEAL officers attending NPS on a two-year master’s degree program. Bucklew scholars serve as an extension of NSW Group commands, who in turn benefit from the SEALs’ education, research efforts, interactions with the academic community, and proximity to Silicon Valley.
