Decarbonization Research Consortium

decarb main content

Mission/Vision
The Navy Decarbonization Research Consortium is a public-private collaboration that advances interdisciplinary research to help the Navy meet the complex challenges of platform decarbonization, with a focus on ships and aircraft. The Consortium supports research across the U.S. to evaluate and identify technologies that show promise for adaptation on naval platforms and accelerate adoption as appropriate.

Context
The Navy's Climate Action 2030 lays the foundation for research and analysis on climate security topics including equipping and operating a climate resilient force. It sets the DON on a path to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, while becoming a more capable, climate-resilient and lethal fighting force. This goal is especially challenging for the Navy; its primary platforms, ships, and aircraft, are reliant on fossil fuels and are difficult to decarbonize, especially in the military context.

The role of the Decarbonization Research Consortium is to create a collaborative approach to answer the complex problems of platform decarbonization for the Navy. In its first year (FY23), the Consortium:

  • Established a consortium that includes individuals, institutions and companies necessary to meet platform decarbonization and adapted membership and structure over time; and
  • Created a Decarbonization Research Roadmap for ONR that includes interdisciplinary research and analysis and research gaps and statements of work for relevant FY23 projects.

In FY24, the Consortium will:

  • Advance interdisciplinary research, evaluate and identify technologies that show promise for adaptation on naval platforms and accelerate adoption as appropriate; and
  • Facilitate additional input from participants from partner government agencies, academic institutions and private sector companies.
