The Systems Engineering Department offers three resident Master’s degrees, four distance learning (DL) Master’s degrees and two (resident and DL) PhD degrees. Graduates earn accredited degree in Systems Engineering, Systems Engineering Analysis, or Systems Engineering Management. Our department ranks in the top 25 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and is well-recognized for the quality of our educational and research programs.

Resident Programs
Distance Learning Programs

The department features a composition of high-quality tenure-track and non-tenure track educators with a wide variety of experience. These include scholars with background in Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial, Nuclear and Software Engineering, as well as scholars with military (all branches) and industry experience. We have approximately 35 faculty members with around half residing aboard NPS and the other half stationed in Fleet concertation areas to support in-person coursework for our robust distance learning program. All Faculty teach in both the resident and distance modality.

The department has an average annual enrollment of around 400 students, making it the single largest department at the NPS and the largest systems engineering department in the nation. Yet, we maintain a student-faculty ratio of 10:1, giving our students the individual attention and mentorship they need to become true Masters in the discipline. Approximately, 25% of our students are in residence, with the remainder being in distance learning programs. Resident students are from all branches of the active force, with the Navy being the most common. Our distance students are primarily Navy civilians from NAVSEA, NAVAIR, NWIC, and other warfare centers or Naval commands.

On average, the SE department executes about $6M in reimbursable research every year. These classified and unclassified research efforts are primarily supported by Defense Research & Development funds, and are thus highly relevant to DoN and DoD in general. Research is focused on Conceptual Design, Model-Based Systems Engineering, Digital Engineering, Mission Engineering, Requirements Engineering, Intelligent Autonomous Systems, and Energy Systems Engineering. Research efforts are supported by several experienced faculty-associates for research. These research efforts allow our faculty to work in direct support of the Navy, while also giving our students authentic, and potentially impactful, thesis or capstone opportunities.
