Dr, Tim Bell of CSUnplugged visited NPS recently and presented his approach to computing to various groups around the Monterey peninsula.  An Associate Professor 
in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, his research interests include public 
understanding of (computer) science, computers and music and text compression.  He is an external research team member of the Cebrowski Institute's The Field 
Guide for Computing.

Computer Science undergraduate students at Hartell Community College tested  the Sorting Networks exercise, designed to demonstrate an approach to parallel 
sorting.  While it can be done on paper, the students appreciated the opportunity to get from behind their desks and learn by implementing their whole body.  
During Dr. Bell's visit, he shared his research with:

• 130 seventh and eighth grade Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students  at La Paz Middle School in Salinas. 
• 150 5th graders from two different elementary schools in Pacific Grove.
• a cohort of Monterey Peninsula teachers that represent elementary, secondary and universities
