Naval War College Graduates Latest Class
By MC1 Lewis Hunsaker
Professor Leonard Wildemann, Director of the College of Distance Education for the Naval War College (NWC), addresses the 68th graduating class during a ceremony in the Barbara McNitt Ballroom in Herrmann Hall, Sept. 15.
“This feat is not just the finishing of another military training course or school,” said Wildemann. “It’s an educational program that marks you for the first time as a true career professional.”
During his speech Wildemann talked about three challenges he believes graduates will encounter as they move forward; the dichotomy of diversity and its counterpart unity, the natural tension between an individual’s rights and their communal interest, and the relationship between authority and responsibility.
“The key to achieving a balance between the components of each system is critical,” said Wildemann.
“If I can give everyone one piece of advice it would be to stay current. Read, write and stay actively engaged in professional debates, similar to the ones you’ve had in the classroom,” added Professor Fred Drake, Chairman of NWC Monterey.
Through the NWC and NPS partnership, 4,466 officers have earned their Joint Professional Military Education certification since the program's inception in September 1999.
