Town Hall Meeting Sparks Discussion on Base Services
By Javier Chagoya
Naval Support Activity Monterey (NSAM) Deputy Public Works Officer Matt Suess, center, along with NSAM Commanding Officer Capt. Kevin Bertelsen, right, answer questions regarding base operations, base security and campus grounds from an audience of NPS faculty and staff during a joint NSAM/NPS Town Hall meeting in Glasgow Hall, Sept. 12.
Bertelsen recapped the Navy’s whittling down of resources in recent years, an impact felt throughout the entire Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) enterprise, not just NSAM and its 15 tenant commands.
“In the current fiscal environment, tightened budgets can pose many challenges that materialize in different ways for our respective organizations. I want to show you today how the basic numbers run down and hope to address some of your concerns,” said Bertelsen.
Bertelsen went on to describe Navy Installations Command (CNIC) shore management and material management policies that serve as guidance for him to implement at NPS. There are maintenance and sustainment schedules that have to align with what is called Common Output Levels, optimized for acreage and population, but ultimately focused on safety and security for NPS’ people.
“I’ll get down in the weeds with you so we can find a solution to your needs,” said Bertelsen.
