Faculty "Pink Book" Available for Distribution

By NPS Public Affairs

The latest edition of NPS' Policy Regarding Appointment, Promotion, Salary, and Tenure of Office of the Civilian Members of the Faculty, known as the Pink Book, is now available for distribution in hard copy through the Academic Planning office. The publication was presented to NPS Provost Dr. Douglas Hensler by Faculty Council Chair Dr. Jim Newman and council Past Chair Dr. David Olwell during the latest Deans, Chairs and Directorates meeting, July 20 in Herrmann Hall.

Faculty leaders say the changes to the document from previous editions are not substantial. Rather, Newman says, the distribution of the new Pink Book is an effort to "revalidate the Pink Book as valid, and as a foundational document for the faculty at NPS."

"A catalyst for the revision is really to include the faculty criteria," added Paula Jordanek, Associate Provost for Faculty Management and Administration, referring to the 2013 memo from Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, the Honorable Juan Garcia detailing the definitions for civilian faculty positions at NPS.

"I highly encourage all faculty to read the Pink Book in its entirety," noted Hensler when this latest version was announced. In addition to the hard copies available through Academic Planning, the Pink Book can be downloaded via the NPS Intranet here.
