Longtime Quality of Life Director Swaps Shores

By Javier Chagoya

Naval Support Activity Monterey (NSAM) Quality of Life Director Megan Ryan has accepted a similar position at Naval Station Rota, and will soon depart the NPS campus to fulfill a lifelong dream to work on Spain’s southern coast. Beginning in 1996, Ryan’s two separate tours with NPS total 18 years of dedicated service to bring the highest quality of life to the university’s students, their families, faculty and staff.

Ryan considers the wide-ranging services provided by the NSAM Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department “her baby.” It’s a sentiment that rings true to her dedication and commitment to 35 years of service to the Department of the Navy.

“This is such a great place to live. There is so much activity at NPS since I’ve returned in 2003, it has all sped by so quickly,” Ryan said. “I’ve overseen renovations of the East and West wings; Herrmann Hall’s first floor project; the Executive Briefing Center; the El Prado dining room; the McNitt Ballroom floor; Monterey Pines Golf Course; and earning the highest accreditations for the Youth Center and the Child Development Center.”

The list actually goes on … Even as Ryan departs NPS, her work on the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites total room and building overhaul plan will go on without her in the next 3-5 years.

“I’ve also been working on plans with Command, Navy Installations Command for the construction of an NPS Student Union building. It will serve as a hub, dedicated to NPS students’ social and organizational activities; a place where the President’s Student Council can meet and share ideas with the student body; and, a place where the Café Del Monte will continue to serve its popular menu items to students on the go,” she said.
